Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru `Monts Luisants`

Côte de Nuits

Jean-Claude Boisset

Jean-Claude Boisset was radically transformed with the arrival in 2002 of viniculteur Grégory...

Patriat, one of the best viticulturalists/winemakers of his generation in Burgundy. Grégory had spent the previous three years working in the vineyards at Domaine Leroy and still spends a great deal of his time in the vineyards, paying his growers by the hectare in order to ensure low yields. He also prefers to work with organic growers, as he finds they produce better fruit. Unlike other Burgundian négociants, Grégory specialises in making wines from 'lieu-dits' or tiny plots of vines, something which accounts for the limited production of most of his wines.

The commune of Morey Saint Denis is located in the central part of the Côte de Nuits, in the area most favourable for the production of Grands Crus. The soil here is limestone based with marl, sand, red silt, and pebbles. Altitude varies between 220 m and 350 m. The Premier Cru Monts Luisants vineyard is at the top of the slope. This vineyard was called "Monts Luisants" or "glowing hill" because in the autumn, the leaves here turn yellow rather than red. The intensive approach to viticulture includes limiting yields via pruning and debudding, and positioning shoots and foliage so that the fruit has maximum exposure to the sun in order to ripen fully and avoid disease.

The grapes were picked at optimum maturity, sorted for the first time on the vines and harvested in small perforated boxes, then sorted a second time in the winery. The grapes were entirely de-stemmed but not crushed. Maceration lasted around three weeks, with frequent treading of the cap. No yeasts, enzymes or tannins were added. The wine was matured in casks ( 20% new oak ) for 15 months and lightly filtered before bottling.

Tasting Notes

Intense in colour, the nose is very floral with scents of rose and hints of red berry. A very elegant wine with fine tannins and a long finish.
