Liberty Wines has bolstered its South American portfolio with the addition of Bodega Garzón from Uruguay. The wines were added to the Liberty Wines list on the 1st January 2019.
Christian Wylie, managing director at Bodega Garzón, comments “We are looking forward to working with Liberty Wines and are confident that their broad customer base will enable us to build on our success to date.”
Family-owned Bodega Garzón was the first winery to plant vines in the South Atlantic coastal region of Maldonado and is now the standard bearer for premium wines from Uruguay. In 2007, consultant winemaker Alberto Antonini was invited to visit the 700-hectare olive grove farm by owner Alejandro Bulgheroni and, following a full analysis of the soil and microclimate, saw the site’s potential to produce fine wines with a strong identity.
The initial plantings of Tannat and Albariño have, over the past 10 years, expanded to 12 varieties (including Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot and Marselan) matched carefully to 1,150 individual plots of around 0.2 hectares in size. With Alberto’s minimal intervention in the winery and judicious use of oak, each of the Garzón wines is a pure expression of its variety and place.
“I have long admired the Garzon wines for their precision and balance, and am convinced they will strengthen our portfolio,” said David Gleave of Liberty Wines.
